It’s taken no less than the EU government to stand up to France’s forced migration of Roma in recent weeks. This is a bold move for the EU parliament against one of its key states.

Whilst the demands of the EU on France are not legally binding, the ‘Prohibition of Mass Expulsion’ motion technically forbids France from continuing its action in recent weeks on the grounds of discrimination.

This year happens to also mark the half-way milestone of the ‘Decade of Roma Inclusion’, launched in 2005, yet this awareness campaign seems to be lost on French politicians courted by populist xenophobic discourse.
